The Aspen Clinic is an NHS specialist neurodevelopmental service providing ADHD autism, dyslexia, dyspraxia and dyscalculia assessments and ongoing support for adults, children, and young people.
We focus on providing timely access to specialist assessment, clear clinical outcomes, and joined up care to deliver a full patient pathway.

NHS Right to Choose
Patients have a legal right to choose their provider for first outpatient appointments for specialist services, including ADHD and autism assessments.
The Aspen Clinic can accept referrals under NHS Right to Choose. We support both GPs and patients to ensure the process is clear and low-burden.

All GPs across England are able to refer patients to The Aspen Clinic for ADHD and Autism assessments for patients aged 5 years and above.
We are able to offer you care if you are:
Right To Choose
- Aged 5 or older
- Registered with a GP in England
We cannot accept referrals for children under 5, or for people already receiving ADHD/Autism care elsewhere. If you’re not sure, ask your GP or contact us.

Who Can Access The Service?
Inclusion Criteria
You may be eligible for referral if you:
- Are aged 6 years or over
- Are registered with a GP in Cheshire and Merseyside
- Present with symptoms suggestive of ADHD or Autism that cause significant functional impairment in at least two life domains (e.g. education, employment, relationships)
- Are seeking a firsttime assessment (not a second opinion)
- Have symptoms that began in childhood, even if they became more obvious later
- Are willing and able to engage in the full assessment and treatment process
- May have cooccurring conditions, provided ADHD or Autism remains the primary concern
Exclusion Criteria
We are unable to accept referrals for:
- Children under 6 years old
- Individuals not registered with a GP in Cheshire and Merseyside (unless accessing via RTC)
- Individuals with unmanaged substance misuse that prevents accurate assessment
- Those seeking a second opinion or already undergoing assessment elsewhere
- Individuals whose primary diagnosis requires specialist mental health input (e.g. active psychosis), unless care is jointly coordinated
- Those unable or unwilling to participate in the assessment process due to capacity or engagement barriers

What to Expect
Triage
Once we receive your referral, our team will check we have the right information from your GP.
Full Assessment
An in-depth appointment with an experienced specialist, focused on understanding your experiences, difficulties, and support needs through discussion and expert designed questionnaires.
Assessment results and aftercare
A clear written outcome and a support plan centred around you, explaining the assessment result, recommended treatments, and the next steps on your Aspen journey.
Annual Review
We will be reviewing your care plan annually if we have prescribed you medication following your assessment.

Once you ask to be referred to The Aspen Clinic, your GP will send us your referral. We will contact you as soon as the referral is received by our team.
Right to choose means you have the right to decide where your GP refers you for assessment or support. To be referred to The Aspen Clinic, please ask your GP to refer you to us and we will be ready to support you.

No, you do not pay for the care you receive by The Aspen Clinic NHS service. Once your GP refers you to us, we provide your care free of charge.
The process is very simple, your GP will refer you to The Aspen Clinic once you contact them and ask to be referred to us. Once your GP refers you, we will contact you to start your Aspen journey.

We understand how difficult it can be waiting for support. Because of this, your care at The Aspen Clinic starts as soon as your GP refers you to us.
Yes, we work closely with your GP to make sure your care plan is monitored across both teams. This is to allow us to offer you the best care that is right for you.
Once your assessment is completed, we will discuss the outcome with you and send you a report including a personalised treatment/support plan which we will go through together.
Yes, at The Aspen Clinic we provide care for children starting from the age of 5. If you are a parent/carer and wish for your child to be referred to The Aspen Clinic, please you’re your GP to refer you to us. Please provide school reports or any other information to your GP to support the referral they send to us. The more information we have the more we can support your child and provide the care that is right for them.
