What is ADHD?
Understand ADHD with clear explanations of symptoms, types, and impact. Discover valuable resources and definitions to gain empowering knowledge about ADHD.
Can I take it every day, including weekends or holidays?
Yes, but some people choose to skip on weekends or vacations (“medication holidays”). That’s optional—talk to us before trying this, especially in kids.
Is this medication habit-forming or addictive?
Stimulants have potential for misuse, especially in people without ADHD. But when prescribed and taken correctly, they’re safe and not typically addictive for those with ADHD.
Will insurance cover this medication?
Most insurance plans cover at least one version (often a generic). If not, we can help find alternatives or assist with prior authorisations.
Will I develop a tolerance over time?
Some people need dose adjustments over time, but this isn’t always due to “tolerance.” We’ll monitor and adjust only if needed.
What are the differences between stimulant and non-stimulant options?
Stimulants work quickly and are most effective for most people. Non-stimulants take longer to work but have fewer risks of misuse or sleep issues. You will be prescribed either a stimulant or…
Will it affect my ability to drive or operate machinery?
It typically improves focus and attention, which can help with driving. But when starting out, see how you feel first before engaging in risky tasks.
What are the potential side effects?
Common side effects include decreased appetite, trouble sleeping, irritability, and headaches. Serious side effects (rare) include heart palpitations or increased blood pressure. Let us know if any…
When and how should I take it?
Take it in the morning (usually after breakfast). Extended-release versions are taken once daily. Short-acting forms may need multiple doses per day.
Can children or teenagers take this medication safely?
Yes, when properly monitored. We watch for growth changes, appetite, and behavior. Paediatric guidelines support their use in kids with diagnosed ADHD.
Will this medication affect my personality or mood?
It shouldn’t change who you are. Some people feel more “focused” or “quiet,” but if you feel flat, irritable, or unlike yourself, the dose may need adjusting.

If you're unsure whether you're autistic or if your differences are related to something else, The Aspen Clinic can help. We offer expert assessments and guidance to help you understand your unique…
What if I don’t think the dose is working?
We may need to adjust the dose or try a different medication. Keep track of your symptoms and check in within a few weeks.
What happens if I miss a dose?
Skip it if it’s late in the day to avoid insomnia. Don’t double the next dose. Let us know if this happens frequently so we can adjust the plan.
Do I need to be monitored regularly?
Yes. We typically schedule check-ins every 3–6 months to monitor symptoms, side effects, and physical health (weight, BP, etc.).
Can I drink coffee or alcohol while on this medication?
Limit caffeine—it can worsen anxiety or raise your heart rate. Alcohol is best avoided, especially with stimulants, as it can increase side effects and risks.
How long does it take to start working?
Stimulants usually start working within 30 to 60 minutes. Non-stimulants can take several days to weeks to build up and show full effects.
Can this affect my heart or blood pressure?
It can slightly raise both. We screen for heart conditions and monitor vitals regularly. If you have a known heart issue, we may avoid stimulants. Let your prescribing clinician know if anything…
Is it safe to take ADHD medication long term?
Yes—many people safely use it for years. We monitor things like blood pressure, weight, and sleep to ensure continued safety.
What is this medication, and how does it work?
ADHD medications, especially stimulants like Methylphenidate, work by increasing levels of dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain.
Does it interact with other medications or supplements I’m taking?
Possibly—especially with blood pressure meds, antidepressants, or certain herbal supplements. Always share your full medication list with your prescribing clinician.
